La présente partie de l'ISO 8655 spécifie la méthode de référence pour les essais de conformité des appareils volumétriques à piston, par laquelle les erreurs de mesure sont déterminées de façon gravimétrique. Les essais sont applicables à l'ensemble des systèmes comprenant l'appareil de base et toutes les pièces sélectionnées pour être utilisées avec celui-ci, à usage unique ou réutilisables, servant à la mesure par prélèvement (In) ou distribution (Ex). NOTE: Les exigences générales et les définitions de termes relatifs aux appareils volumétriques à piston sont données dans l'ISO 8655-1. Pour les exigences métrologiques, les erreurs maximales tolérées, les exigences pour le marquage et les informations à fournir aux utilisateurs d'appareils volumétriques à piston, se référer à l'ISO 8655-2 pour les pipettes à piston, à l'ISO 8655-3 pour les burettes à piston, à l'ISO 8655-4 pour les diluteurs et à l'ISO 8655-5 pour les distributeurs. D'autres méthodes d'essai telles que les méthodes photométriques et titrimétriques feront l'objet d'une future partie 7 de l'ISO 8655.
