Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board

About the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB)

The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) collaborates with the Australian and New Zealand rail industry to provide Standards for every sector-based organisation. The RISSB is the Australian rail industry’s only accredited Standards development organisation. It offers an extensive catalogue of publications designed to help industry parties increase safety, reduce operating costs and boost productivity.

Established in 2003, the RISSB uses its network of forums, groups and committees to share important information across the industry, facilitating and promoting the adoption of technical and safety Standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions about the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board.

The RISSB is the rail industry’s co-regulatory partner in Australia and New Zealand. It’s a non-government, member-based not-for-profit organisation that is jointly funded by the rail industry and Australia’s state and federal governments. Operating under a memorandum of understanding with these governments, the RISSB develops Standards, codes of practice, guidelines and rules designed to help industry organisations optimise transport safety and streamline operations.

The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board focuses on providing Standards and industry codes of practice which help industry-based organisations to achieve the optimum safety levels. The RISSB board gathers and manages safety data and risk analysis models, and seeks public consultation and feedback on technical issues.

The RISSB also provides training and advice, stages events and programs, and co-ordinates an industry-wide network of standing committees, advisory groups and product development groups.

Funded by industry and government, the RISSB is overseen by a board of directors made up of an independent chair, two independent directors and four industry directors. All directors are elected by members at the AGM. The RISSB is based in Spring Hill, Queensland, Australia.
