Specifies principles for the procedure of risk assessment by which the knowledge and experience of the harm related to machinery is gathered together to aid in assessing risks during all phases in the life of machinery. Guidance on the information necessary to allow risk assessments to be carried out is provided, as is a brief outline of some of the techniques available.

This Standard specifies general principles for the procedure known as risk assessment, by which the knowledge and experience of the design, use, incidents, accidents and harm related to machinery is brought together in order to assess the risks during all phases of the life of the machinery (see AS 4024.1201).This Standard gives guidance on the information required to allow risk assessment to be carried out. Procedures are described for identifying hazards and estimating and evaluating risk. The intent of the Standard is to provide advice for decisions to be made on the safety of machinery and the type of documentation required to verify the risk assessment carried out. This Standard is not intended to provide a detailed account of methods for analysing hazards and estimating risk, as this is dealt with elsewhere (e.g. textbooks and other reference documents).A summary of some of these methods is given in Appendix A.

Originated as part of AS 4024.1(Int)-1992.
Previous edition part of AS 4024.1-1996.
