1.1This guide covers the detection, collection, handling, and preservation of trace evidence in the laboratory. It is intended to assist forensic science practitioners in the selection and application of techniques based on the circumstances of each case. Although the bulk of the procedures and steps included in this guide are applicable in the laboratory settings, certain aspects of trace evidence detection, collection, handling, and preservation can be applicable in the field (for example, crime scene).

1.2Some specialized types of trace evidence, such as soil (refer to Guide E3272), lubricants, lachrymators, fire debris, gunshot residue (refer to Practice E3307) and explosives, have special considerations for collection that are outside the scope of this guide.

1.3This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4This standard is intended for use by competent forensic science practitioners with the requisite formal education, discipline-specific training (refer to Practice E2917) and demonstrated proficiency to perform forensic casework.

1.5This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
