This method covers the determination of the moisture content of a soil as a percentage of its dry mass using a microwave oven. This is a rapid method and is considered less accurate than the standard method AS 1289.2.1.1. A method of correlating results from this method with the standard method is given in AS 1289.B3.1 and this may be used where a more accurate result is required. The method is not suitable for soils containing gypsum, calcareous material or organic matter unless a temperature-controlled microwave oven is used as the temperature of drying cannot be controlled.
