Provides an accurate and precise method for determination of volatile matter by heating the coal in ovens set at 400 degrees Celsius and 900 degrees Celsius. The two-stage heating accommodates the large release of volatiles from this type of coal without loss of solids.

This standard sets out a method for determining the volatile matter of air-dried low rank coal, either directly or with an initial oven drying.
