This Standard sets out a method for the collection of total gaseous and acid-soluble airborne particulate fluoride in ambient air and its analysis using a fluoride ion-selective electrode. The method is applicable to total gaseous and acid-soluble airborne particulate fluoride in ambient air at concentrations of 0.01ug/m3 or greater. The upper limits of determination are 2000 ug/m3 of hydrogen fluoride where a 10% (m/V) sodium acetate solution is used and 700 ug/m3 where a 5% (m/V) sodium acetate solution is used for collection. These values are based on a one day sampling period and a sampler flow rate of 10 L/min.The presence of acidic gases other than hydrogen fluoride affects the upper limit of determination.NOTE: This method is subject to certain interferences. However, the addition of total ionic strength adjustment buffer (TISAB) eliminates a number of possible interferences. Variation in ionic strength is overcome by maintaining a high concentration of sodium chloride in the TISAB solution. Interference from hydroxide ions is overcome by buffering the TISAB solution to a pH of between 5 and 6. The effects of metallic ions are minimized by the addition of a complexing agent.
