This International Standard deals with the safety of electric sewing machines for household and similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 volt for single-phase appliances and 480 volt for other appliances. Overlock machines and electrical sets are within the scope of the standard.

This Standard will supersede AS/NZS 3350.2.28:1996 seven years from the date of publication (i.e. on 23 June 2013). During this seven year period either AS/NZS 3350.2.28:1996 or AS/NZS 60335.2.28:2006 may be used for regulatory purposes in both Australia and New Zealand.
