Specifies a procedure for determining the time for a polyester or epoxide resin system maintained at a specified temperature to reach the stage in the process of hardening at which resistance to movement of a plunger, immersed in the resin and mechanically driven with a slow reciprocating motion, reaches a value indicative of the onset of elasticity due to gelation. Suitable for systems which the gelation time at the test temperature is not less than about 5 min. Results on high viscosity resins or filled systems should be treated with caution because of the effects of differences in viscoelasticity or the densities of the mixtures.
