Describes the preparation of test pieces to be used for determining the Mooney viscosity as specified in DIN 53523 Part 3. Applies primarily to the preparation of test pieces from natural and synthetic rubbers in their as delivered condition, but also to the preparation of test pieces from reclaimed material. Oil-plasticized rubber and black masterbatch, whether oil-extended or not, are to be treated in the same way as the corresponding raw rubbers. From unvulcanized mixes, with and without added vulcanizing agents, test pieces can be prepared directly, i.e. without pretreatment. DIN 53523 Part 2 specifies the requirements to be met by Mooney viscometers, DIN 53523 Part 4 giving specifications for the measurement of the time to incipient cure (Mooney scorch).
