Defines a general-purpose system, relatively economical and easy to apply, for use in limited distance applications. Specifies device-independent mechanical, electrical and functional interface requirements, so as to permit direct communication between apparatus of different kinds from different manufacturers with a minimum of restrictions on the performance characteristics. Permits asynchronous communication over a wide range of data rates.
