Describes the safety significance of software in system safety programs conducted for DOD weapon systems in accordance with MIL-STD-882 and explains how hazard identification and control functions of a system safety program relate to the process specified by DOD-STD-2167 for major software development programs. It applies to both new systems and to modifications to an existing system or its system software. Although directed to weapon system software, much of its contents can be applied to non-military systems, or to military system of lesser scope, when appropriately tailored. Provides guidelines on how a system safety analysis and evaluation program should be conducted for systems which include computer controlled or monitored functions.
