This method describes a procedure for the recovery of bituminous binders from pavements and from similar bituminous materials in a form suitable for further testing. The procedure is suitable for the recovery of bitumen of measurable penetration; it may also be used for materials containing volatile matter such as cut back bitumen but the results may be less precise. The separation and recovery are designed to cause the minimum change in the properties of the binder. This method is also suitable for the recovery of soluble binder from pitch bitumen or tar bitumen mixtures, provided that the solubility of such binder in dichloromethane is not less than 95% when determined by IP 47, modified to use dichloromethane. Properties of the soluble bitumen recovered may not be the same as those of the total binder
