Provides proposed common criteria for SONET network elements that supplement the requirements in TR-NWT-000253, Issue 2. Focuses on common criteria for SONET operations. Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) operations consists of many functions such as performance monitoring, alarms surveillance, & memory administration. To perform these operations functions, Operations Systems must be able to Communicate with Network Elements (NEs) & control remote NEs as part of a Telecommunications Management Network. NEs must also communicate with each other to manage their resources. As large numbers of SONET NEs are deployed with more complex operations communications architectures, the use of intra-site LANs & the ISO ES-IS & IS-IS routing protocols becomes increasingly important.
