In alkaline pulping using resinous woods, the rosin and fatty acids are saponified and dissolved in the spent digestion liqor. When the liqor is concentrated the rosin and fatty acid soaps become insoluble and float to the surface. This black liqor soap is the raw material for producing tall oil.
