Gives far-field method to measure mode field diameter, of single-mode fiber. Applies to both Class IVa and Class IVb types of single mode fiber operating near 1300nm or 1550nm. The method for obtaining the mode field diameter of a single-mode fiber is a two step procedure. First, the far-field radiation pattern of the fiber is measured. Second, a mathematical procedure is used to calculate the mode field diameter from the far-field data.
