Fiber optic attenuators are passive optical components that intentionally reduce the optical power propagating in fiber and have a fixed or adjustably variable attenuation. They are typically used in fiber optic transmission systems to reduce the optical power received by the photo-detector to a level that is within the dynamic range of the optical receiver.
