La norma specifica le procedure di analisi e valutazione per determinare le temperature di autoaccensione (TSI) di polveri combustibili o materiali granulari in funzione del volume mediante esperimenti di caricamento a caldo in forni a temperatura costante. Il metodo di prova specificato è applicabile ad ogni materiale solido per il quale la correlazione lineare fra lg (V/A) e l'inverso della temperatura di autoaccensione 1/TSI (con TSI in K) è valida (cioè non limitato solo a materiali instabili ossidabili).
