Describes two methods for selection of wood density for specimens to be used in testing strength and stiffness properties of joints made with mechanical fasteners. Both methods are equally suitable. Wood density is assumed to be normally distributed with a coefficient of variation of about 0.15. Density is only one property influencing strength of a joint. Other relevant properties include growth ring size and slope of grain.
