CENELEC Standards

About the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization

The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) is comprised of the National Electrotechnical Committees of 34 European countries.

CENELEC is one of only three organisations that the European Union and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) have officially recognised as being responsible for the development of electrotechnical industry Standards at European level.

Almost 80% of CENELEC’s Standards are identical to or based on International Electrotechnical Commission Standards. Manufacturers from across the globe can benefit from applying internationally recognised Standards.

Voluntary Standards have a pivotal role in supporting Single European Market development and facilitating trade between countries, opening new markets, cutting costs related to compliance, supply and purchase and improving safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions about the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization.

CENELEC is comprised of the National Electrotechnical Committees of 34 European countries. It prepares voluntary Standards for the European electrotechnical industry.

Standardisation activities cover a range of sectors, including defence and security, electric motors and transformers, energy and utilities, household appliances, occupational health and safety, healthcare, transport and packaging.

The CENELEC Technical Board (TB) is responsible for overseeing the Standards development program, which prepares industry guidelines such as electrical safety Standards, lighting Standards and risk management Standards.

CENELEC works with national standardisation bodies and committees, technical committees and working groups to support the development of harmonised European Standards.

Other activities include creating strategies to address digital technologies and cybersecurity, building regional, national and international networks, hosting forums and workshops and running training programs.

CENELEC is a non-profit organisation based in Brussels.

The supreme governing body is the CENELEC General Assembly (AG), which is chaired by a President and comprised of delegations from each member country’s National Electrotechnical Committee. The Administrative Board and Presidential Committee are other corporate governing bodies.
