The following design rules cover circular openings in cylindrical, conical and spherical pressure vessel casings and the calculation of the necessary reinforcement within the following limits: (1) 0,002 0,1 a e 1 2 ≤ − − ≤ D s c c (2) if 0,1, a e 1 2 > − − D s c c 1,7 i a ≤ D D or 2,0 i a ≤ D D applies for sa ≤ 80 mm (cylinder) (3) if 0,1, a e 1 2 > − − D s c c 1,5 i a ≤ D D applies (sphere) (4) if 0,002 , a e 1 2 D s − c − c > 3 1 a i ≤ D d shall apply (5) For cylindrical and conical shells, where calculations are performed using creep rupture or an application of the AD 2000-Merkblatt S 1 or S 2 is required, e.g., with high strength steels (minimum yield strength > 440 MPa at 20 °C) or high numbers of load cycles, the scope of this AD 2000-Merkblatt is limited to diameter ratios of di /Di ≤ 0,8 (minimum yield strength > 440 MPa at 20 °C).
