Describes the determination of manganese in pulp. The pulp is ashed at 575 deg C and the ash dissolved in nitric acid. The manganese is oxidized with sodium periodate to permanganate and determined colorimetrically by absorbence at 525 nm. As a contaminant in pulp, manganese acts as a catalyst in oxidizing cellulose.
