Bellcore's view of appropriate generic technical requirements and objectives for the synchronous DS3 Add Drop Multiplex (ADM 3/X). The ADM 3/X provides an interface between the Synchronous Transmission (SYNTRAN) DS3 signal and the DS1 signal. This document describes a version of the ADM 3/X that generates a SYNTRAN DS3 signal from up to 28 DS1 signals and another version of the ADM 3/X that adds and drops several DS1 signals from an existing DS3 signal stream. ADM 3/X can be used in both the interoffice and distribution (loop) networks. A description of basic functions and features is also provided.
