La norma, parte della serie UNI ISO 2859, stabilisce piani di campionamento e procedimenti che possono essere utilizzati per valutare se il livello di qualità di un entità (lotto, processo, ecc.) sia conforme ad un determinato valore. I piani di campionamento sono elaborati al fine di ottenere un rischio di contraddire un livello di qualità dichiarato inferiore al 5%. Il rischio di fallire nel contraddire un livello di qualità dichiarato non corretto è pari al 10%, che è correlato al rapporto di qualità limite. I piani di campionamento sono forniti secondo tre diversi livelli di capacità di discriminazione.
